Cardinal Rules Traffic Officers

Rules When Traffic Officers Are Directing Traffic

When a traffic officer is directing traffic, you must stop or go where the officer directs you. A traffic officer's directions overrule:

  1. Traffic signals
  2. Road signs
  3. Road markings
  4. The rules of the road

If a traffic officer is controlling an intersection, be careful to get into the correct lane. Show the officer where you want to go by using your indicators.

Traffic officers are typically dressed in blue uniforms and give signals as described in the Signs, Signals and Road Markings section.
