Signs, Signals and Road Markings Overview

Introduction

Generally speaking, there are three different ways to present messages to road users:

  1. Signs mounted on poles or overhead structures
  2. Signals given by lights or people
  3. Markings painted on the road surface

The purpose of signs, signals and road markings is to ensure all road users can enjoy the roads safety and productively. They do this by:

  1. Regulating traffic
  2. Guiding drivers to the right routes and destinations
  3. Warning drivers of hazards and conditions on the road ahead

Temporary vs. Permanent Signs

Many signs have yellow, red and black colour combinations. These are temporary signs that take precedence over nearby permanent signs. Temporary signs must be obeyed in the same way permanent signs are obeyed.

Signs come in different shapes, colours and with different content. They broadly split into the following groups:

Guidance Signs

Give guidance about directions, routes, distances, locations, and facilities: 
•Blue signs are found on freeways.

•Green signs are found on other roads.

•White signs give local direction.

•Brown signs are especially for travellers.
