Each day, more than 30 lives are lost and 20 people are left permanently disabled from accidents on South African roads. In the Easter Weekend of 2011 alone, 203 people were killed in road accidents and South Africa's progress against its targets to reduce fatalities is abysmal. Driving safely, therefore, is not only a legal requirement – it is a responsibility to fellow citizens to ensure everyone can live long and healthy lives.

To be allowed to drive a vehicle in South Africa, you have to obtain a driver’s licence and carry it with you at all times while driving.  K53 is the term for the current driver licence test, a term originating from the numbered revision of the law it is based on. The system t itself is related to a similar system implemented in the UK in the 1980s and is now the foundation of what you need to obtain a Learner's Licence and Driver's Licence in South Africa.
